Our Abbey College Cambridge students are celebrating another year of outstanding performance in national mathematics competitions.

In the UK Mathematics Trust’s Senior Mathematical Challenge, our students took home an amazing haul of 77 certificates including 31 gold, 26 silver and 20 bronze. Not only does this represent our biggest ever haul of awards in a single year, it also means that Abbey College Cambridge students have been awarded over 200 individual gold certificates since the challenge began in 2006!

Mathematics teacher Ross Barker commented on this year’s success in the Senior Challenge; ‘We are all very proud of the outstanding achievement of our students. We believe that providing opportunities to be stretched beyond the A level syllabus makes them more well-rounded mathematicians.’

14 of our gold certificate winners from the senior challenge will now be amongst the 1,000 best young mathematicians in the UK invited to compete in the first round of the British Mathematical Olympiad at the end of November. A further 4 students will also go on to participate in the Senior Kangaroo.

Our GCSE students also performed well in the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge, achieving 3 gold medals, 5 silver and 7 bronze certificates.

Speaking of the overall performance, Head of Mathematics Dr Cindy Wells commented ‘I am delighted by the fantastic results achieved this year, which is our best year so far. It reflects the high standard of mathematics teaching here at Abbey College Cambridge, as additional challenges like this develop thinking and questioning skills which are essential to gaining a place at a top university.’
