Congratulations to Sha Jiena (Iris) for being named as our Abbey College Cambridge Student of the Week. Iris was nominated by Physics teacher Ellen Slalow, and English teacher Candela Delgado Marin. Here are their comments in support of her nomination:

‘Iris has been working consistently hard. She has completed every question I have been able to throw at them at any point in time, labelled them, asked for help and then asked for more questions. She is generally lovely and participates magnificently in class. You really couldn’t ask for more from a student.’

‘Her constant hard work, her conscientious completion of homework and positive attitude in class (she always asks questions, volunteers answers and takes notes), but also for showing a clear determination to improve her English.’

Well done Iris!

Football

Abbey College Cambridge Football Sports Team

Abbey College Cambridge’s two five a side football teams, Abbey United and Abbey Wanderers, had a very successful winter season finishing 4th and 7th respectively out of 8 teams in their five-a-side league. Students found it great training and preparation for the 11 a side season.

The first 11 a side fixture of the season took place against Bellerbys. A rival Cambridge based international college. After an intense first half Abbey triumphed, winning 6-0!

Particular standout performances so far:

• Rei Beqiri – commitment and participation for Abbey Wanderers and an exceptional defensive performance vs Bellerbys
• Muhammad Banye – continual improvement during the first term and a great team player
• Andrei Mattia – provided flair and creativity for both Abbey United and the first XI
• Joshua Okosun – a central midfield enforcer who can dictate the pace of a game and has scored frequently for Abbey United
• Mak Pak Yung Edward – an amazing addition to our football setup who provides an incredible turn of pace and creativity who will continue to shine in the Abbey first XI.

Our Boys first XI football team, Abbey Rovers, now turn their attention to the 11 a side adult league which starts on the 15th January. Best of luck to our first XI for the season.

‘Football last term was really amazing for me, coming together as a team from different countries all around the world and working together to win matches really meant a lot to me and I believe this term is going to be better because we know each other very well so it’ll be a lot easier and more interesting.’
Joshua Okosun

‘I really liked the 5 aside football as it really improved my speed and the reaction time in the game. Our team did pretty well coming fourth in the league table. I’m really looking forward to winning the 11 aside league this season.’
Alex Yermolenko

Badminton

Abbey College Cambridge Badminton Sports Team

This is the first year we have been able to offer competitive badminton for all of our students. At the start of the year students were given the opportunity to try out for our three teams; Mens, Ladies and Mixed, who all play in the Cambridgeshire adult badminton leagues.

It has been a very challenging start with our teams finding the experience and teamwork of their opponents very difficult to overcome. However our players have shown determination and we hope to record some wins in 2018! The season continues for all three of our teams.

Particular standout performances so far:

• Ong Joo Yuen – commitment and participation for the Mens and Mixed teams. He has played every game possible and attends all training sessions.
• Lim Jian Yuan – flair and skill shown in matches that led to our first game won by the mixed team. His commitment is also very impressive.
• Teng Nattalyn – Outstanding performances for the Ladies and Mixed teams led to Nattalyn being scouted by other teams and being asked to play at the Newmarket Badminton Federation and being for the Cambridgeshire county team.
• Magdalena Tomaszuk – Fantastic improvement since the start of the year. A regular starter for the Ladies and Mixed teams.

‘Having no idea we would be playing seasoned adults, Jian and I went into this completely clueless. Even so, I speak for both of us when I say we have enjoyed ourselves immensely. Learning has been key throughout this experience, ranging from coping with extra commitment to the sometimes humbling matches. Pushing forward, I hope to see more casual players participate in the competitive scene as it is an exposure not easily replicated any another time in our lives. ‘
Ong Joo Yuen

‘We have regular training every Friday night and play at least two competitions a month. I usually play Ladies matches in doubles with Nattalyn, a friend from Malaysia. She is such a good player! I am very happy to play with her. What I like the most about badminton is playing with some challenging players. You have to think a lot about your technique, plan and be really fast all the time! And it is almost like fencing!’
Magdalena Tomaszuk (taken from her blog at https://astridmagda.blogspot.co.uk)

Other sport and class highlights

Abbey College Cambridge Dodgeball Sports Team

Volleyball and Basketball continue to be our other most popular sports, and we aim to provide competitive fixtures for both of these teams this term.
Alongside our competitive sport, we also run lots of classes for students to keep active and fit. Many students have taken part in Dance, Zumba and other classes. In particular Settayesh Lashkari Ghouchani has been recognised by our sport coaches for her attendance and commitment to fitness classes.
Abbey College Cambridge also has active staff! They have the opportunity to play football, have Dance lessons and Yoga classes.

What’s coming up in the Spring term?

• Mens 11 a side league for Abbey Rovers
• Badminton fixtures for all three ACC teams
• Competitive fixtures for Basketball and Volleyball clubs
• Friendly Netball fixtures to promote more girls participation in sport
• Improved gym hours
• Trips to the Badminton Yonex All England Championships and a British Basketball League match

Abbey College Cambridge Student Investor Challenge

Abbey College Cambridge student Volodymyr Federov is celebrating success after placing in the top 20 in the London Institute of Banking and Finance Student Investor Challenge round one league table.

The Student Investor Challenge is the UK’s premier investment competition, with over 400,000 students from 2,500 schools taking part. Entrants invest virtual money on the London Stock Exchange and aim to keep their stock portfolios healthy by following the ups and downs in the market, judging when to buy and sell in order to make a profit.

Volodymyr, who is from the Ukraine and studying on our International Foundation Programme Business Management and Economics Pathway, has been trading under the name of ‘Gordon Gecko’ and currently sits 16th 0ut of 4,865 competitors. His achievement is even more impressive as he has been trading as an individual, where most of the other competitors take part in teams of two or more students.

Abbey College Cambridge Economics Tutor David Tilley helps run the challenge and commented on Volodymyr’s achievement. “Volodymyr has shown an exceptional level of application his investment portfolio. He researched a wide variety of companies that would complement his investment strategy, and his success against some of the highest achieving schools in the country is well deserved”.

Volodymyr is now well placed to progress to the competition’s semi-finals, where the top 500 teams will need to correctly predict the closing price of certain assets, earning points for the accuracy of their prediction and how long their prediction has been held.

We wish the best of luck to both Volodymyr and the other Abbey teams taking part!

Heidi Allen visits Abbey College Cambridge

Today Abbey College Cambridge welcomed South Cambridgeshire Member of Parliament, Heidi Allen. Mrs. Allen, who was invited to the college by our A Level Government and Politics students, gave a talk about her background in science and business, and how she got into politics after witnessing the Tottenham riots in 2011.

Mrs. Allen talked to our students about her political career so far, and about the daily demands of life as a politician in Westminster and in her South Cambridgeshire constituency. She then spent time answering questions from our students on subjects that ranged from Brexit, how Parliament works, and feminism in politics, to her own greatest achievements and even Margaret Thatcher’s dietary habits! On behalf of the college we would like to thank Mrs. Allen for taking time out of her busy schedule to share her experiences and inspire our students.

Abbey Cambridge Volunteering Club visit East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices

On Tuesday 6th March students from our Volunteering Club paid a visit to our College charity, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). From its base just North of Cambridge the hospice supports families and cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions.

We were welcomed by Polly West, EACH Community Fundraiser for Cambridgeshire, who explained the role of the hospice and how they support not only the children but their families too. As there were no children on site we were fortunate enough to get a tour of their wonderful facilities, including the music room, the crafts room and the sensory room. There is also a very peaceful area for reflection and prayer called “The Haven” which has an instant calming effect on those entering. The hospice has its own swimming pool and lovely gardens.

Our students were extremely interested and quite amazed by the extent of the work carried out by the hospice and their staff, also learning that it costs in the region of £5,000 a day to run the hospice. As our college charity, we have helped to contribute over £30,000 to EACH over the last 4 years through the fundraising efforts of our staff and students. EACH is extremely grateful to the college for our continued support, and we are sure that the visit has encouraged the volunteers to organise even more events in the future.

DLD Students Business Studies Jaguar Land Rover Trip

Our AS and Pre-Degree Diploma Business Studies students gained a practical insight into operations management with a visit to the Jaguar Land Rover Factory in Solihull. The car manufacturer was acquired by TATA from Ford ten years ago and has enjoyed massive investment during this time to effectively doubled its capacity with the very latest in robotics.

DLD Students Business Studies Jaguar Land Rover Trip

In the morning students were given an overview of the company and the students were then split into two groups, one going out and doing a supervised factory tour and the rest staying behind to do team activities. In the afternoon they swapped over.

DLD Students Business Studies Jaguar Land Rover Trip

Activities were based around communication and lean production techniques. The students became very competitive and excelled at building models to order in short time!

DLD Students Business Studies Jaguar Land Rover Trip

The factory tour gave us first-hand visibility of the end to end production of Range Rover models. The students asked very insightful Operations and Human Resources questions and loved seeing the cars and robotics in action and being able to bring the text book to life in a unique fashion. All in all a great day and one we will look to repeat next year.

Juan Sets His Sights on Chemistry at Oxbridge After Attending Cambridge Summer School

Abbey College Cambridge Summer School Student Juan

Abbey College Cambridge student Juan Fernandez Pottecher has been getting a taste of life as a University of Cambridge student this summer.

Juan, who is from Spain and currently studying for his A Levels, won a place on a prestigious University of Cambridge Chemistry Summer School programme after finishing in the top 50 student Chemists in the country (and receiving the Roentgenium Award) in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge.

We caught up with Juan as he returned to his second year of studies at Abbey College Cambridge to find out more about his experiences over the summer:

How did it feel to do so well in the Chemistry Challenge and receive a place on the Chemistry Summer School?
‘After finishing the challenge I knew I hadn’t done badly but I thought I hadn’t done well enough to be selected for the camp. So when I got the email saying that I got in, I was shocked. It was a very rewarding moment, knowing that the extra reading and the practice that I had done had been completely worth it.’

How do you think you teachers helped you?
‘I had an immense amount of support from all my Chemistry teachers, Allan, Robin and Neil, who always answer the random questions I fire to them or even help me find the answers to the questions they do not have answers to.

They have been amazing at giving me books of all sorts and other documents to fulfil my growing desire to learn Chemistry. I should also mention that Allan and Robin ran a chemistry masterclass in which they dedicated to teach me as well as an eager group of students problem solving strategies in Chemistry.’

What did you learn on the Summer School?
‘I learned which areas of chemistry I need to improve and I learned about the University. Despite having much fun getting surprisingly wrong results for both of the practicals I did at the camp; this is something I will definitely look forward to improving.’

What was it like studying at Cambridge University?
‘I somehow felt refreshed. The content was studied in a much greater depth than in A levels, and it was taught with unbeatable effectiveness.

What did you enjoy most about the summer school experience?
‘Contradicting what I said earlier, it was the first practical, two hours long, that I enjoyed the most. We were assigned the task of determining the structure of a complex copper ion by means of two different kinds of titrations. Unlike the practicals that we do in A levels, we could not expect or guess what the outcome of the experiment would be.’

How will this affect your future plans?
‘After going to the camp, I think I should have a go at applying to Oxbridge, and I definitely know now that I want to dedicate myself to study chemistry in university and hopefully well beyond.’
