Abbey College Cambridge Maths Team Challenge

Last week we held the first ever Abbey College Cambridge Year 12 Maths Team Challenge. The challenge gave students the opportunity to tackle a variety of engaging mathematical activities while developing teamwork and communication skills.

Abbey College Cambridge Maths Team Challenge

Seven teams from both Maths and Further Maths groups joined in and spent two hours building towers, tackling mathematical problems and completing a cross number challenge. All the students took it very seriously and competition was fierce. In the end we had to say goodbye to two teams and five teams have now progressed to the semi-final which will be held in the New Year.

The Maths Challenge has proved very popular with our all students and we plan to make this an annual event.

Students of the Week, October 2018

Abbey College Cambridge Student of the Week Salita

Second year A Level student Salita Som from Cambodia was nominated for her ‘hardworking attitude as well as her cheerful and extremely helpful demeanour, She was a school ambassador at the beginning of term and has been a wonderful member of the tutor group: kind and helpful to everyone. She is always the first to volunteer. Yesterday she offered to do a presentation during the PDD session yesterday on the drug Thalidomide. She spoke beautifully and intelligently and set a good example on how to research and present. She is prepared to go ‘above and beyond’. Her PowerPoint was very well put together and her ideas will be put to good use within her Personal Statement.’

Abbey College Cambridge Student of the Week Jaden

First year A Level student Wang Ruiyu (Jaden) from China. ‘Not only has Jaden scored 100% in the first Topic Test, he is utterly devoted to his studies; he has attended multiple Cambridge University lectures (which he has then proceeded to tell me all about during lunch times…) and is always the first to volunteer a response in class. Further to this, he is a wonderful team player – both patient and generous with his peers who either do not possess his prior learning in the subject nor the level of English language to communicate their points as succinctly.’

Abbey College Cambridge Student of the Week Ashleigh

Foundation student Ashleigh Hepburn from the Bahamas was nominated by business tutor Eavan ‘for being an outstanding student. She always goes above and beyond. Consistently works hard, is highly committed and is an excellent role model for other Foundation students. She has supported new students that have recently arrived helping them to catch up.’

Abbey College Cambridge Speak English Week

Speak English Week 2019

The annual Abbey College Cambridge ‘Speak English Week’ celebrations ran from the 4th – 10th of February. This is a week of fun activities designed to help and encourage our students to keep practicing and improving their English language skills. This year students got to learn about the spooky side of Cambridge with a special colleges ghost tour (hosted by a real ghost I’m told!). In the hall we hosted a house points quiz (won by the team from Juno House – go lions!) and a creative arts competition, magic show and practical magic workshop. The week was finished with our ever popular poetry and creative writing competition, with students from across the year groups showcasing their own bold and spellbinding compositions based around the theme of ‘dreams’.

Abbey College Cambridge Abbey Inspires Alliance to Armada

Abbey Inspires, from ‘Alliance to Armada’

The highlight of this week’s ‘Abbey Inspires’ evening lecture programme was provided by our History tutors. Students took on the roles of opposing naval commanders to recreate the 1588 battle between the British Navy and Spanish Armada. Students learned about the events that led up to the battle, which will be covered in the A Level syllabus. Head of Humanities Dr David Shah was impressed by how much the students immersed themselves into the battle role-play, commenting ‘I certainly enjoyed the students getting into the roles of the historical characters (e.g. Chiara’s rebellious Francis Drake, Patrick’s ever-more nervous Medina-Sidonia and Kala’s scarily convincing Philip II!).’

Abbey College Cambridge Duke of Edinburgh Award Training Expedition

Students complete DofE training expedition

Over the weekend our Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award candidates completed their training expedition by camping, trekking and canoeing in the wild and windy Cambridgeshire countryside! This supervised expedition precedes their qualifying expeditions later in the year, where the students will journey across a wild, unfamiliar area for up to 4 days whilst working as a team to navigate, camp and cook for themselves (with mostly remote supervision by Abbey staff). The DofE is a globally recognised qualification that develops student’s skills and confidence and is highly valued by both universities and employers. Abbey College Cambridge is a DofE Directly Licensed Organisation, providing both silver and gold awards. Find out more by visiting the Duke of Edinburgh site here.

Abbey College Cambridge students receive offers from all 24 Russell Group Universities

Abbey College Cambridge Graduation 2018

This year Abbey College Cambridge students have once again received offers to study at the UK’s top universities.

83% of Abbey College Cambridge A Level students have received an offer for at least one of the ‘Russell Group’ of elite UK universities, and 74% of our International Foundation Programme students have received an offer from one or more Russell Group institutions.

Between them our students have secured offers from all 24 of the Russell Group universities:

College Principal Dr Julian Davies commented ‘Getting an offer of a place at a top UK university is difficult, and I’m incredibly proud of our year 13 students. As a cohort, to secure offers for all 24 Russell Group universities is a fitting result for all the hard work they have been putting into their studies. It shows that the wide ranging support that we provide through programmes like our pre-degree diploma, UCAS sessions and extra-curricular clubs really pays off. I’m particularly proud of our Foundation students, who continue to go from strength to strength. Now it’s time to work hard, lock in those grades and secure those places!’

Abbey Cambridge Alumni Experiences: Chi from Vietnam

Abbey College Cambridge Student Juan

Chi joined Abbey College from Vietnam in 2014. She graduated from the Business Management and Economics pathway of our International Foundation Programme in 2016 and joined the University of Bath, where she is now in the final year of an Accounting and Finance Degree. Here she gives some advice for students entering the first year of their degree.

“My name is Chi. I’m currently a final-year Accounting and Finance student at University of Bath. What I’m going to tell you in the rest of my post is about my life experience as a fresher. I want to start with an interesting fact, which I believe most of you already know and that is first-year results are not counted towards your final degree – hurray!. I know the first thing come to your mind may be something like “Yes, I have more free time to watch all the movies and shows on Netflix” as soon as they are released” or “Yes, more free time to play LOL or other trending PC games.

“You may wonder how I can read you mind. The answer is simple and it is because I used to think like that when I first heard it. However, what the university offers to students has changed my mind and I understand why they don’t count first-year results. Moving from A Level to higher education is quite a big jump because you are new to literally everything. It takes time to settle down in a completely different place, to get used to new teaching and learning methods, to make friends and especially to discover yourself. In my opinion, to minimise study as a burden during your ‘’getting-used-to-everything’’ period your first-year results do not affect your final degree.

“I would highly recommend to make the most of your first year by trying to step out of your comfort zone. No one will judge you because you and others are in the same position (i.e. new to everything) and you will never know if the experiences that you have gained will benefit you in the future (such as helping your CV stand out from the crowd). Before I went to university I would never think that one day I will perform in a large theatre hall with over 200 people watching. I did that in my first year, not only as a singer but also as a dancer, and I found that I did a pretty good job – no shame or shyness at all!”

This experience helped me to be more self-confident, self-motivated and better at time management. Aside from this, I made a lot of friends and a few of them have been my best friends since then.”

Abbey College Cambridge students are celebrating an outstanding set of A Level results in 2019. Out of 292 exams taken at Abbey Cambridge this year, 32% received the top A* grade, and 70% of exams were marked at A* – A grades.

92% of papers received A* – B grades, this represents the highest ever A* – B percentage score achieved by Abbey Cambridge students. An astonishing 98% of all papers achieved A* – C grades this year, the joint highest A* – C pass rate in Abbey history.

Looking in more detail, 5 of the 14 A Level subjects offered by Abbey College Cambridge achieved a 100% A* – B pass rate; Biology, Art, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Psychology. 8 subjects also achieved a 100% A* – C pass rate this year; Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Art, History, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Psychology.

College Principal Dr Julian Davies commented on this year’s student results:

‘2019 marks our college’s 25th birthday, and we couldn’t ask for a better present than these results. We are proud to be a college that brings students together from across the globe to study in this wonderful city. Every day on campus, I see the diligence with which our students approach their studies, ably and closely supported by our teachers, pastoral and support staff. All of them really do deserve to enjoy this exceptional set of results, and the exciting futures that await them at university and beyond.’

In 2019, 84% of Abbey College Cambridge’s A Level students received an offer to study at one or more Russell Group Universities, including offers for the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, University College London, Imperial College London, and the London School of Economics and Political Science. Abbey College Cambridge GCSE Results 2019

Abbey College Cambridge’s ‘Class of 2019’ GCSE students are celebrating a truly exceptional set of exam results in 2019. Almost one quarter of papers sat achieved the top 9 grade, often called the ‘super A*’. This compares to an average of around 4% of papers achieving the grade nationally.

69% of Abbey students achieved the top grades of 9-7 (A*-A equivalent under the old grading system) against a national average of 20.8%. 96% of grades achieved by Abbey students were C or higher. Abbey students also secured a 100% pass rate.

In Chemistry, 50% of students achieved grade 9, with 100% percent overall 9-7 (A*-A) pass rate. In Biology, 80% of students achieved grades 9-8 (A*) and in Physics students achieved an 88% 9-7 grade pass rate.
Over one third of Abbey Cambridge Mathematics students achieved grade 9, with 94% achieving 9-7 grades. The college’s art students also had reason to celebrate, with 75% of exams taken in Art & Design achieving 9-7 grades.

In total four GCSE subjects achieved a 100% 9-6 (A*-B) pass rate this year: Chemistry, History, Mathematics and Physics. Art and Design, Biology, Physics and Business Studies achieved a 100% 9-5/4 (A*-C) pass rate.

College Principal Dr Julian Davies, was justifiably proud of his student’s achievements, commenting;

‘GCSE is a growing cohort here at Abbey College Cambridge, and this this year’s student results are truly outstanding, representing as they do a significant improvement on last year’s already impressive GCSE performance in almost every measure.

More and more young students from across the world are now choosing to study for their GCSEs here the UK, and results like those achieved by Abbey College Cambridge more than justify that decision.

I hope that our class of 2019 students are as proud of their performance as we are of them, they have built a tremendous platform for their future studies at A Level and beyond, and we wish them every success.’

Abbey College Cambridge Alumni: Ben Shen

(Ben pictured with Abbey College Cambridge teachers and staff during a recent visit.)

‘After graduating from Abbey Cambridge, I went to Imperial College London to study EIE (electronic and information engineering). Now I have just finished my second year there.

Life at Imperial is very intensive but worthwhile. My degree focuses on information processing. We start by learning the essence of communication and computing in the first two years, then specialise in areas such as machine learning, digital system design, and communications.

The part I love the most about my life here are projects. In the first two years, I have designed PCB from a schematic, written Verilog for FPGA, and built complex projects such as C Compiler. All of these projects were fascinating, and experiencing them will really makes me stand out from other graduates.

My life at Abbey College definitely helped me get here. The college has excellent teachers who help you to get the grade you need. They also understand how to present yourself to the university and to make yourself an attractive candidate.

Apart from their efforts to help you excel in academic studies, they also have activities designed to help to broaden your knowledge and vision. This helps you to really decide what you are interested in, not just which industry gets paid more, or where your parents want you to go.

For examples, I took part in the Engineering Education Scheme at the college. Before this I was thinking of becoming an engineer, as I enjoyed solving problems, but I was not really sure where to get started. After the scheme, it became clear that the digital system was the area I am really interested in. The scheme really positively influenced me, especially considering how enjoyable I find the digital system, even after spending two years studying it.’

Ben has spent the summer working as Design & Verification Hardware Intern at Cambridge based semiconductor and software design multinational company Arm. He will return to Imperial College London in Autumn 2019 to complete his undergraduate studies.

Abbey College Cambridge Student Agustin - Experiences Life at Cambridge

You were recently awarded the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge Roentgenium Award, placing you in the top 50 student Chemists in the UK. How did it feel?

“Doing well in the Chemistry Challenge made me feel a sense of accomplishment, as my efforts yielded a reward. More importantly I was always looking forward to going to the camp, as I already had a similar experience during the Second Round of the Chemistry Olympiad, albeit less stressful, which meant I could focus more on improving my practical and theoretical skills, rather than testing them.”

How do you think your teachers helped you?

“I am deeply grateful to my teachers for their encouragement throughout the year. Neil, Robin and Allan would always answer any queries I had and give me tips to further perfect my exam and practical skills. Moreover, Allan would run the Chemistry Club weekly, which gave me a place where I could solve chemistry problems with their help.”

What was it like studying at the University of Cambridge? What did you enjoy the most?

“It was always fun. Being taught by people who are as passionate about chemistry, and more, than I am has fuelled my desire to study further. I also had the opportunity to do things I never had before inside the labs, which was quite exhilarating.”

What are your future plans?

“Before going to the camp, I was hesitant about which college I would apply to in Cambridge University, but now that I had the opportunity to talk to St. Catharine’s students, I made up my mind for that college.”
